What is Social 2.0?
Social media isn’t new.
Facebook (b. 2005)
Twitter (b. 2006, d. 2022)
Instagram (b. 2010)
Twitch (b. 2011)
Musical.ly (b. 2014) - became TikTok (f. 2018)
Even Musical.ly is has turned ten. 😳
This is Social 2.0…
A period in history when digital fundamentally shifts.
Here’s what’s changing.
1. Money 🤑
Then:
People are the product. Sites monetize users. Brands stalk you.
Now:
People have more oversight. Creators can earn. You discover brands.
2. No-likey? 👎
Then:
Sites would gauge popularity in likes. People would be able to see popularity by the numbers.
Now:
Algorithms just figure out what works for you. Content that is viewed frequently by people like you makes it into your feed or even your FYP.
3. Lifestyle 🏄♂️
Then:
Social was about networks. Old school friends, colleagues, pals. Holiday snaps, major life events.
Now:
Social is about personality. It’s niched-down into interests, hobbies, and weird preoccupations – #TaxidermyTok anyone?
4. Followers ➕
Then:
Followers are everything.
Now:
Followers mean very little. Content performance is what matters to the algorithm.
5. Shopping 🛍
Then:
Social isn’t about selling things.
Now:
Social is about instant inspiration and commerce. TikTok Shop is already the 4th most popular e-commerce platform in the US. Tipped to be number 2 globally by 2027.
